Organist Jakub Stefek, tenor Wojciech Parchem, conductor Lilianna Krych, and the 14-member March Match Ensemble will perform at the Markuskirche Cultural Church. The concert will present exceptional works released last November on the album "Music of David Eisenstadt." The evening will open with a lecture by Dr. Jakub Stefek, a specialist in Jewish musical culture, who will provide insights into the history of synagogue music.
The protagonist of the concert – Dawid Ajzensztadt – was born in 1890. At the age of 31, he took over the direction of the choir of the Great Synagogue in Warsaw. In addition to church services, the choir also enriched numerous secular music concerts with its performances. Accompanied by the sound of the harmonium, it delighted audiences at the annual concerts, which were attended by all of Warsaw's musical circles. Over the years, these events have been considered an outstanding achievement of Polish vocal art in the pre-war period.
The career of David Eisenstadt and the history of the Great Synagogue Choir came to an abrupt end with the outbreak of World War II. The Great Synagogue on Tłomackie Street was demolished on May 16, 1943. Its destruction also interrupted the centuries-old tradition of Jewish choral and organ music in Poland.
To keep David Eisenstadt's legacy alive, Polish artists are reviving his music in St. Mark's Church 82 years later.
